Discuss the role of the Vice –President of India as the Chairman of the Rajya Sabha

The Vice President of India serves as the ex-officio Chairman of the Rajya Sabha, the upper house of the Parliament of India. In this role, the Vice President presides over the proceedings of the Rajya Sabha and ensures that the rules and procedures of the house are followed.

 

As the Chairman of the Rajya Sabha, the Vice President has several important duties and responsibilities, including:

 

1. Presiding over the sittings of the Rajya Sabha and maintaining order in the house.

 

2. Declaring the results of voting on motions and resolutions.

 

3. Deciding on points of order and interpreting the rules of procedure of the house.

 

4. Giving the casting vote in case of a tie in the vote of the house.

 

In addition to these duties, the Vice President also serves as a mentor and guide to the members of the Rajya Sabha and helps to resolve disputes and ensure smooth functioning of the house.

 

The Vice President of India is elected by the members of the Electoral College, which consists of the members of both houses of Parliament i.e Rajya Sabha and Lok Sabha. The Vice President is elected to a term of five years and can be re-elected to the office.
