Ferns are a popular plant group that can be found all over the world, from the tropics to the arctic. They are known for their beautiful foliage and are popular for both indoor and outdoor gardens. However, not many people know about the importance of ferns in ecological systems. Ferns play a crucial role in forest ecosystems as they are an indicator of healthy forests. Ferns are also part of the Epiphytic family, which means they grow naturally in soilless conditions, obtaining water and nutrients from the trees around them. Ferns are fascinating plants that have been around for over 360 million years and are still widely studied by scientists and botanists.
Eravikulam National Park in Munnar, India, has recently established a Fernarium, which is a unique garden that showcases a wide variety of ferns. The Fernarium is the first of its kind in the hill station and has already planted 52 varieties of ferns. The goal is to increase the number of ferns in the park to cover all 104 varieties found in the area. The Fernarium has been set up near the orchidarium and will be open to the public from April 20. The park officials hope that this new attraction will provide visitors with awareness about the park’s biodiversity.
The Fernarium at Eravikulam National Park is more than just a collection of plants. It is also a vital tool for conservation and education. The Fernarium showcases the unique ecology of the area and helps visitors understand the importance of preserving the habitat of the endangered Nilgiri tahr. The Fernarium will also serve as a resource for researchers and botanists to study the different fern varieties found in the park.
The Fernarium is a fascinating place for plant lovers and nature enthusiasts. It provides a peaceful environment to observe the different fern varieties up close. Visitors can learn about the different types of ferns and their ecological significance. The Fernarium is also a great place for photography, with the beautiful and unique foliage of the ferns making a perfect backdrop.
Apart from the Fernarium, Eravikulam National Park has many other attractions for visitors. The park is the natural habitat of the Nilgiri tahr and is a must-visit for wildlife enthusiasts. The park has also recently added new facilities for tourists, including a selfie point and buggy cars for visitors to explore the park.
